Summary:
The focus of this event is towards
children from pre-kindergarten to early teens. Family Safety Festival is
comprised of three major events; TAT or Touch-A-Truck, Safety Programs and
our Kiwanis Bike Rodeo. All Rodeo participants (kids) got a free hot dog, soda
and chips and a chance for one of the three bikes given away. All the time this is going on we had free popcorn, balloons and toys for all the rodeo participants. For
entertainment we have the steel drum band called Steelin' Thunder with some great sounds throughout the
whole event. You would not believe the different sounds they
can make with those steel drums. Feel free to click on the links to
see some of our photos of the event!
Touch-A-Truck, where the kids climbed
on and into most of the vehicles with assistance from parents and
attendants.
Of course, we have many safety events; Life Flight
Helicopter, DARE Program, child registrations and finger
printing, Rockland Fire Department, and Knox Communication with
Ready Fox and 911 demonstrations and many more. Not to forget the
Bike Rodeo itself is a major safety event in that it teaches kids
about bike safety.

Our Bike Rodeo is usually a bicycle safety clinic featuring
bike safety inspections (and optionally
quick tune-ups), and a safety lecture about the rules of the road. This is
followed by a ride on a miniature "chalk street" course set up in a parking
lot where young cyclists are shown where and how to apply the rules. Other
activities include Helmet fitting, prizes and drawings, and in some cases
commercial activities such as booths set up by bike shops etc.. The main focus
of a bike rodeo is Cycling Safety for young cyclists, age’s kindergarten to 14
or so. The age group
that bike rodeos try to reach is those who are just beginning to use bikes to
ride around the neighborhood in quiet residential areas up
through the early teenage years where the bicycle serves as the principal
means of transportation around town.
